I just read another new author and...

Updated: Aug 14

I'm still recovering. This book is called Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco, and it was an intense ride with murder, intrigue, magic, and demons--the kind that infiltrate your nightmares and make you think maybe nightmares aren't so bad. After the murder of her twin sister, Emilia summons a demon to help her track down the murderer. Unfortunately, she has no experience in dark magic and messes up the summoning and binding spell in more ways than one. *wink, wink* The most obvious problem is she summons not just any low level demon, but one of the seven princes--Wrath. He looks furious to find himself trapped in a containment circle at her mercy and shocked at the new matching tattoos he and Emilia are sporting on their forearms.

Can she trust this wicked demon, or is he leading her carefully to her own destruction?

This is not a simple, he's bad, he's hot, and he'll fall in love with the main character and find his good side, while stealing kisses from her at every turn. If that's what you're looking for, this isn't it (though he is pretty hot). This story has me saying in one chapter, "Oh, he's not so bad" and by the next chapter I'm telling Emilia, "No, he absolutely cannot be trusted!"

The ending... oh, gosh, the ending. I'm still reeling!

I alternated between wanting to read the next book immediately to not being ready to read the next book. I've decided for now that I'm going to let the book marinate in my brain and wait until my emotions are under control before I reach for the next. I'm sure I will, though, because a ride this intriguing, intense, and dare I say, emotionally traumatizing, is kind of a rare thing!

I have to give this book 5 stars, the god of mind-altering reads demands it. If you're looking for a story that will stay with you long after you read it, click on the author's link below and get your own copy.

FYI: This book is a pretty clean read with no sex, but there is tension and a couple of sensual scenes with kissing.

Recommendations: I would recommend this book to readers aged sixteen and up. The drama is intense and the demon romantic chemistry between the main characters is definitely there, and there are a couple of sensual scenes but no sex. There are some swear words, but nothing over the top. There is however, violence including murders of witches with their hearts ripped out, but the murders take place off-screen.
